SMSIL - Hazardous Waste-to-Energy in India

Commissioning the World's Largest Plasma Gasification Facility Processing Hazardous Waste

SMS Infrastructures Limited (SMSIL), Central India’s largest civil engineering and infrastructure development company, is using the Westinghouse Plasma Gasification plasma technology and reactor vessel design to build two 68 tonnes-per-day energy recovery from hazardous waste plants in India. The construction is complete at the first facility in Pune, India and the gasifier has been commissioned. SMSIL is also building another 68 tonnes-per-day energy recovery from hazardous waste facility in Nagpur, India. This facility will likely be completed by the end of 2010. Each plant will provide comprehensive disposal services for a wide variety of hazardous waste, and will produce up to 1.6 MW (net) of electricity.

  • The Pune facility is the largest plasma gasification energy recovery from hazardous waste facility in the world.
  • Upon commissioning of both facilities, the number of commercial energy recovery from waste facilities using Alter NRG’s plasma gasification technology will double from two to four facilities.
